Kabale residents are sounding the alarm over a surge in animal thefts in their area, which they believe is undermining government efforts to eradicate poverty.

Locals in Kahara Sub-county, Kabale District, expressed their concerns on January 8, 2025, while receiving piglets donated by Kabale District Woman MP, Hon. Atwakiire Catherine Ndamira.

The residents, led by Mbabazi Paison and Christina Bikogwaomuhangi Kazigo, attributed the thefts to idle youth who dropped out of school and now spend their time playing matatu (a local card game) before stealing animals at night.

They also claimed that many animals purchased with PDM (Parish Development Model) funds were stolen by marijuana smokers. This prompted them to call on the government to provide another round of PDM funding.

In response to the issue, Hon. Atwakiire Catherine Ndamira emphasized the need to strengthen village security teams to curb the rising criminality.

This concern is not isolated, as there have been increasing reports of livestock theft in Kabale, with district leaders acknowledging the growing problem.
