Leaders in Kisoro district have slammed the upcoming 39th National Resistance Movement (NRM) Liberation Day celebrations.

The NRM party is gearing up to celebrate its 39th National Liberation Day on January 26, 2025, at Kabamba barracks in Kasamba County, Mubende district, under the theme “Celebrating Pan-African Solidarity and the People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-Economic Transformation.” However, a section of leaders in Kisoro district have challenged the rationale behind spending on the celebrations.

The Kisoro district Councilor for People with Disabilities (PWDs), Baker Niyigaba, criticized the NRM government for its failure to combat corruption and embezzlement of public funds, which he argues has severely impacted service delivery across the country.

Niyigaba stated, “NRM leaders have been victims of corruption and embezzlement of public funds, and this has been a vital factor in its failure to fulfill its manifesto for the last 39 years because taxpayers’ money is being misused.”

The LCV Councilor for Nyakinama Sub-county, Emmanuel Ndayisaba, expressed his concern over unfulfilled presidential pledges, such as tourism roads and the John Kale Institute of Science and Technology.

Ndayisaba accused the district’s unwavering support for the NRM as the primary reason for its neglect. “Kisoro district has been neglected by the NRM government when it comes to service delivery because they clearly know that we are staunch supporters of their leadership. I urge the youth to now vote for leaders who are capable,” he stated.

However, the Kisoro district Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement – NRM, Ndikuyeze Ramanthan, acknowledged the NRM party’s remarkable achievements over the past 39 years in power.

Ramanthan attributed the delay in service delivery in Kisoro district to divisionism among leaders, particularly Members of Parliament. “NRM leadership has achieved more in districts where leaders cooperate together, unlike Kisoro where divisionism is the order of the day. These Members of Parliament are the ones letting down the development of Kisoro district,” he stated.
