Kampala, Uganda — The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) operates a WhatsApp service that helps Ugandans check the status of their National ID applications and find out where to pick up their cards.
According to NIRA, out of more than 7 million newly printed National ID cards in Uganda, only 1.5 million have so far been picked up by applicants, leaving over 5.5 million cards still pending collection at district offices.
“While we continue printing and dispatching cards, we encourage applicants to visit their respective district offices to pick up their cards,” the statement reads.
Using the WhatsApp Service to Check Status
Applicants can use the NIRA WhatsApp line, 0766 501071, to check their National ID status and confirm whether it is ready for pickup, as well as the exact collection location.
Through this service, applicants are required to send their application ID and will receive real-time updates regarding their ID’s readiness and designated pickup office.
NIRA says it continues to improve its communication and feedback platforms following public concerns about delays and limited updates.
“Based on feedback gathered, we’re improving our feedback platforms to give precise notice of application updates, including readiness and pickup locations,” NIRA said.
The authority emphasized that its offices are operational across all districts, making it easier for applicants to collect their National IDs without delay. Printing and dispatching of additional cards is ongoing.
Applicants can also call NIRA’s toll-free line, 0800 211 700, for inquiries.
