Bushenyi, Uganda — Five people have died following a landslide at a gold mining site in Kayanga Village, Kyamuhunga Sub-County, Bushenyi District. The tragic incident occurred while artisanal miners were working in the pit, burying them under soil and debris.
According to residents, over 25 people were mining gold when the landslide struck. Emergency responders and local community members rushed to the scene, but five individuals were found lifeless. Several others sustained injuries and were treated at nearby health facilities.
Mr. Gumisiriza Lauben, a resident of Kayanga Cell, called for calm and urged the government to provide machinery and safety equipment to help miners work safely.
Hon. Birungi Beutrace, LC3 Vice Chairperson of Kyamuhunga Sub-County, condemned the incident, noting that the affected families had been mining for two to three years without major incidents. She called on authorities to strengthen safety measures and prevent future tragedies.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Mugarura Anthony, 23, from Butoha, Magambo
- Twizukye Sansio, 30
- Mujurizi Julius, 55
- Akanyamba Stuart, 16
- Saul Twinomujuni, 25
The victims were from Kayanga Village, Kyibingo Cell, and Kataruma Village, all within Kibazi Parish in Kyamuhunga Sub-County.
Bushenyi District Police Commander, Afande Mugizi Felix, confirmed the incident and urged residents to remain calm. He warned miners against returning to the affected area, stating that the government is investigating the cause and will take legal action against anyone found negligent.
Deputy RDC of Bushenyi, Mr. Kasigazi Donanto, said the government condemns the incident and pledged support for the families of the deceased.
This tragedy highlights the risks faced by artisanal miners, many of whom dig deep pits without formal equipment or safety measures. Authorities and community leaders are calling for stronger safety regulations and support to ensure safer mining practices.
Rescue operations focused on retrieving bodies safely and providing assistance to affected families continue, while investigations into the landslide are ongoing.
