MUKONO, UGANDA — Police in Mukono have recovered Nathan Tuwandike, a 25-year-old student of Uganda Christian University (UCU), days after he was reported missing.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, officers received information from members of the public on March 2, 2026, at about 2:00pm that the student had been seen wandering around Mukono Town. Police responded immediately and safely recovered him.
“He is currently in safe custody as further assessments are being conducted,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, in a statement.
Authorities thanked members of the public for their vigilance and cooperation, noting that their prompt reporting contributed significantly to the student’s safe recovery.
In a separate statement, Uganda Christian University confirmed that Tuwandike, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing Sciences, had been found safe and reunited with his family.
“We are pleased to inform the university community and all UCU stakeholders that Nathan Tuwandike, a student pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing Sciences, has been found safe and sound. He has been successfully reunited with his family,” the university said.
The institution also expressed appreciation to the Uganda Police Force for what it described as timely and critical intervention during the search efforts. It urged students to continue supporting one another in the spirit of care and responsibility.
However, neither police nor university authorities provided details regarding the circumstances of his disappearance on February 25. The absence of information has raised questions within sections of the student community, with some calling for greater clarity.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that Tuwandike may have been facing mental health challenges, although officials have not publicly addressed this claim. Authorities say further details will be communicated in due course as assessments continue.
