After 21 Years, Kasese Diocese to Lead National Martyrs’ Day Celebrations

KASESE, Uganda — The Kasese Catholic Diocese has officially launched preparations to lead the 2026 Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations, scheduled for June 3 at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine in Wakiso District. This marks the first time in over two decades that Kasese will host the national pilgrimage, having last done so in 2005.

Speaking at the launch ceremony on Sunday at Our Lady of Assumption Kasese Cathedral, Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira emphasised the importance of prayer, unity, and generosity in supporting the celebrations.

“We are here to officially launch our preparations for our turn to animate the Uganda Martyrs’ celebrations this year. We have begun with prayer because everything comes from God. Our hearts should wholeheartedly give towards God’s work,” Bishop Kibira said.

The diocese is seeking Shs 4.5 billion to facilitate the event and has established 16 sub-committees to mobilise resources and coordinate activities. A special bank account has been opened at Centenary Bank, Kasese branch, to receive contributions. So far, the eastern zone of the diocese has raised Shs 60 million, while the western zone will hold a fundraising drive on 12th April .

Bishop Kibira called on Christians to support the preparations, saying, “Let us not look at this budget as a burden. I know people have many responsibilities, but this function will attract blessings for our district, our children, and our families.” He also urged reconciliation and spiritual preparation, stating, “We from Kasese will be special pilgrims to Namugongo, so we must first prepare ourselves spiritually through confession and reconciliation.”

The preparations come as the diocese continues the construction of a multi-billion shilling cathedral, which has now reached the roofing stage. “I know some of you are wondering why we are fundraising for Namugongo when our cathedral is not yet complete. With God’s grace, we shall roof it by the end of April,” Bishop Kibira added.

The chief guest, Benjamin Cadet Buturo, commended the people of Kasese for peaceful elections and urged parents to prioritize their children’s education. He also praised the diocese for its role in national development.

Benson Kule Baritazale, Prime Minister of the Rwenzururu Kingdom, emphasised the importance of peace and unity, stating, “We cannot achieve development without peace in our homes. Unity and reconciliation are key for social transformation.”

Uganda Martyrs’ Day commemorates the 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs who were executed by Kabaka Mwanga between 1885 and 1887 for their faith. The celebration attracts millions of pilgrims from across Uganda and neighbouring countries to the Namugongo shrines. Of the martyrs, 22 were Catholic and 23 were Protestant. The Catholic martyrs were beatified on 6th June 1920, by Pope Benedict XV and canonized on 18th October 1964, by Pope Paul VI.

Bishop Kibira encouraged both financial and spiritual support for the event. He highlighted the importance of beginning spiritual preparations with priests, including those abroad, in prayer for the success of the pilgrimage.
