Following his absence from a crucial harmonisation meeting held on April 29th, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has given Pastor Robert Kayanja and his Channel 44 TV up to May 4, 2026 to respond to allegations that his recent TV sermons misrepresented court proceedings.
The meeting was held at UCC offices in Bugolobi, where Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga of Top TV and Bishop David Kiganda of KTV appeared in person, while Kayanja didn’t attend but was instead represented by his lawyers.
The meeting was convened to handle complaints arising from media broadcasts involving the three pastors. However, the focus shifted to Kayanja’s Channel 44 broadcasts, which are already under investigation.
UCC is probing sermons aired on March 19, 20 and 21, 2026, where Kayanja allegedly commented on an ongoing case at Mengo (Mwanga II Court) in a way that misrepresented evidence presented in court, as petitioned by Ojambo and Ojambo Advocates.
UCC had earlier, in a letter dated April 20, 2026, confirmed receiving the lawyers’ complaints that the broadcasts distorted testimony from a forensic expert and misled the public about what transpired during the trial.
At the April 29 meeting, UCC made it clear that preaching on TV is regulated like any other broadcast content.
With Ssenyonga and Kiganda present, the Commission agreed to handle all related complaints together due to their similarity.
UCC has now directed Channel 44 TV to submit recordings and a written explanation by May 4, 2026, warning that failure to respond will not stop the investigation and may lead to further action.
The matter will return to UCC on June 2, 2026, when all parties are expected back for further hearing, in a case which has now turned on whether Kayanja and his station can justify the content aired, as the UCC moves to determine if broadcasting rules were violated.
