Kampala, Uganda — Opposition leader and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is awaiting a court ruling on his bail application in a case where he faces charges of misprision of treason.
Lukwago, who also serves as the president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was recently arrested and remanded to Luzira Prison. Prosecutors allege that he had knowledge of an alleged plot involving veteran opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale, but failed to report it to authorities between 2021 and November 2024.
The state argues that Lukwago should not be granted bail, citing concerns that he may interfere with witnesses, pose a flight risk, and compromise national security interests connected to the ongoing treason-related proceedings.
His defense team, however, has urged the court to release him on bail, emphasizing his permanent residence, long-standing public service record, and health-related concerns that they say require him to be outside custody while the case is heard.
The court is expected to deliver its ruling after considering submissions from both sides.
In a related development that has drawn political attention, Kenyan lawyer and opposition figure Martha Karua was reportedly denied entry at Entebbe International Airport. The incident has triggered criticism from opposition politicians and human rights advocates, who argue it raises questions about judicial independence and political freedoms in the region.
Authorities have not yet issued a detailed public explanation regarding Karua’s denied entry.
The developments come amid heightened political tensions linked to ongoing legal proceedings involving opposition figures.
