Former Buganda Kingdom minister and ex-Kalangala MP, Israel Mayengo, has dismissed claims that Buganda elders declared their support for Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.
Mayengo’s remarks come after Kyagulanyi shared photos on social media showing two former Katikkiros — Mulwanyamuli Ssemwogerere and Dan Muliika — alongside a group of about ten elders who visited his home in Magere on the eve of the presidential nominations. The images sparked speculation that the elders had endorsed Kyagulanyi as the preferred candidate for Buganda’s interests in the upcoming race.
However, Mayengo has clarified that the visit was purely a courtesy call. He said the elders only wished Kyagulanyi well as he embarks on his campaign trail and that their visit should not be interpreted as political endorsement.
> “They merely wished him good luck. That does not make him special in any way because we are ready to do the same for President Museveni or any other candidate who seeks our blessings,” Mayengo stated.
The clarification aims to dispel growing online narratives suggesting that Buganda’s traditional leadership had thrown its weight behind Kyagulanyi. Mayengo emphasized that Buganda elders remain neutral and are open to engaging with all political figures who show respect for the kingdom’s values andits people.
