Condom Shortage in Ibanda Sparks Concern Among Bar and Guest House Owners

Bar and guest house owners in Ibanda are increasingly worried as condoms become scarce in public health facilities, forcing them to turn to expensive private clinics for supplies.

According to Rwenzori FM, bars previously relied on government distribution through public facilities for condoms. However, since donor support was withdrawn, these supplies have dwindled significantly.

During a recent spot check at several bars and guest houses, our reporter found that the situation has become a serious challenge.

David Beinomugisha, manager at Afrikana Bar and Lodges, explained that purchasing condoms from private clinics has become a struggle due to high costs. He appealed for urgent government intervention to restore access.

Similarly, Robson Mutungi, manager of Safe Way Inn Bar and Accommodation, said they use an average of 24 condoms daily, making the expense of buying privately unsustainable.

The ongoing shortage threatens efforts to promote safe sex and public health in the region, underscoring the urgent need for the Ministry of Health to address the supply gap.
