A devastating accident occurred on a Sunday evening, resulting in two fatalities and three individuals suffering severe injuries. A fuel truck bound for Masaka lost control, veering off the road and colliding with pedestrians. The accident took place around 8:35 pm at Kavule, located in Kiringente sub-county, Mpigi district, along the Kampala-Masaka road.
The fuel truck, with the registration numbers UAX 996L/UAL 712X, is a Mercedes Benz, and it lost control, striking a young boy walking by the roadside. Tragically, it continued to crash into others who were standing along the roadside at Kavule township, leading to the death of one more person and injuring three additional individuals.
Katonga Police region spokesperson Kharim Majid identified the deceased as Innocent Magala, aged 15, and Bruce Mazinga, aged 30. Both were residents of Kavule in Mpigi district. The injured victims are Steven Ssansa, Frank Kizza, and an unidentified adult male.
The police in the region have initiated an investigation into the accident, and there are efforts to locate the truck driver, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.
“The driver of the fuel truck fled after the accident, and the police in the area are currently searching for him. We urge anyone with information to come forward and report to us,” said Majid.
Traffic police officers from the Mpigi Police Station promptly responded to manage the accident scene to prevent a potential explosion of the fuel tank.
The wreckage of the truck was towed to Mpigi Central Police Station, and the bodies of the deceased were taken to City Mortuary in Mulago, Kampala, for a police autopsy report. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
Kavule has been marked as a blackspot along the Kampala-Masaka road, where several accidents have occurred, often involving hit-and-run incidents that have claimed lives.
Kharim Majid issued a warning to all motorists, urging them to exercise discipline and respect other road users to prevent accidents, particularly during the festive season when the country is gearing up for celebrations.
