National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has commented on the recent failed assassination attempt on Pastor Alloysious Bugingo, the proprietor of Salt Media and House of Prayer Ministry, which resulted in the death of Bugingo’s bodyguard, Corporal Richard Muhumuza.
Expressing his reaction on social media, Bobi Wine stated that he was “shocked but not surprised” by the alleged gun attack on Pastor Bugingo. He highlighted that gun violence has become normalized in Uganda, and every such incident leaves people wondering who the next victim might be. Bobi Wine anticipated that President Museveni might blame the incident on various entities and criticized the lack of thorough investigations into previous similar cases.
Bobi Wine expressed skepticism about the outcomes of investigations, citing instances where critical evidence went missing, case files were stolen, and CCTV footage was unavailable. He emphasized the lack of trust in state institutions, contributing to citizens questioning whether the attack was real or staged. Despite past disagreements with Pastor Bugingo, Bobi Wine called for prayers and sympathy for him, his family, and the deceased bodyguard.
The opposition leader urged love for enemies and hoped that Bugingo would use the incident to gain insight into the country’s realities. Bobi Wine criticized religious leaders who seek safety in the presence of soldiers and guns instead of relying on God. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of speaking out against governance issues, even before individuals become victims of crimes.
The attempted assassination has raised concerns about the prevailing gun violence in Uganda and the need for transparent and conclusive investigations into such incidents.
