MOLATAR, Uganda – In a powerful call to action, the Principal of Namasale Technical School, Canon Moses Ogwal Owiny, is urging parents across the Lango sub-region and Uganda to rethink their approach to education and embrace the life-changing potential of vocational training.
In an exclusive interview at his office on Tuesday, Canon Ogwal, a man credited with a remarkable turnaround at the institution, challenged the long-held stigma that technical schools are a fallback for academically weaker students.
“Sometimes back, people used to think that a Technical school is for poor performance students and those who are not bright,” Canon Ogwal stated. “This is not true because a Technical school student is a job maker, not a job seeker.”
This philosophy has fueled an extraordinary transformation under his leadership. When Canon Ogwal took the helm, Namasale Technical School was on its knees with a mere 61 students. Today, that number has skyrocketed to over 1,000, a testament to the renewed confidence and rising standards at the institution.
This growth is not just in numbers but in scope. Canon Ogwal has broadened the school’s horizons by introducing new Business Studies courses, complementing the traditional technical trades and providing students with a more diverse skill set for the modern economy.
He attributes the school’s impressive performance in national exams to a “collective responsibility” shared by parents, teachers, and students. He took a moment to specifically commend the parents who have entrusted the school with their children and have been diligent in paying school fees, acknowledging their role as vital partners in this success story.
With the school’s newfound stature, Canon Ogwal is on a mission to change the mindset of local parents. He advises them to desist from the costly and often unnecessary culture of sending their children to distant regions in search of quality education.
“I call upon parents from Lango and across the country to enrol their children at Namasale Technical School,” he said, extending an open invitation. “The standard here is well compared to other good schools in other regions. We have proven experience, performance, and quality education right on their doorstep. Why incur the extra expense and send your child far away when a school of this standard is here, nearest to you?”
Promising an inclusive and forward-thinking leadership, Canon Ogwal Owiny is not just rebuilding a school; he is reshaping the future of its students, one practical skill at a time, and positioning Namasale Technical School as a beacon of opportunity in the region.
