The government has spent UGX 35.2 billion on procuring brand new vehicles for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, while responding to a petition by the Uganda Local Government Associations (ULGA) during a parliamentary session on September 4, 2025.
Magyezi explained that the vehicles, all Toyota Double Cabin pick-ups, were procured to ease transport challenges faced by local government leaders and to improve service delivery in their areas.
“Government has procured brand new vehicles (Toyota Double Cabin pick-up) for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors. The first batch of 90 vehicles will be in the country by the end of September 2025, while the last batch is expected in November 2025. We thank H.E. the President, Cabinet, and Parliament for appropriating UShs 35.2 billion in the supplementary budget in April this year for this purpose,” Magyezi said.
The Minister added that the vehicles were part of a broader effort to strengthen local governments and address concerns raised by ULGA regarding the inadequate facilitation of leaders at district and city levels.
The move is expected to improve mobility and efficiency for local leaders as they supervise and coordinate development programs in their jurisdictions. However, this move has been criticized by some sections of the public who branded it as a reckless spending arguing that there are more critical areas of service delivery that could have used this money to step up the quality of services.
