The International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) has today donated 20 heifers to park-edge communities around Mgahinga and Bwindi Gorilla National Parks. The initiative aims to empower local residents to support and actively participate in conserving the vital ecosystems surrounding the parks.
The 20 heifers donated today are part of a larger program in which 45 heifers will be distributed in total. The beneficiaries received the animals as follows: Nyarusiza (10), Muramba (5), and Rubuguri (5).
Speaking during the handover ceremony, IGCP Director Makambo Wellard emphasized that effective conservation cannot happen without community involvement. He urged residents to continue collaborating with IGCP and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to promote sustainable conservation activities.
Mutabazi Henry, IGCP’s Country Coordinator, noted that the organization has worked with these communities for the past 34 years, highlighting both the challenges and progress made. He praised local residents for becoming more aware of the benefits of living near national parks and for supporting conservation initiatives.
While commissioning the donated cows, Kisoro District RDC Hajji Badru Ssebyala urged the public to protect the national parks, noting that they generate revenue that directly benefits surrounding communities. He commended IGCP for “giving back to the community from the treasure that surrounds them.”
Representing the beneficiaries, Nambajje Christopher thanked IGCP and UWA for their continued partnership with park-edge communities, acknowledging the many projects from which locals have benefited over the years.
Meanwhile, local leaders including District Production Officer Richard Habumugisha and Nyarusiza Subcounty Veterinary Officer Spriyano Munyansanga advised the beneficiaries to take proper care of the cows to ensure they fully benefit from the initiative.
