Kampala businessman Mukisa, the CEO of Mukisa Property Consultants, has set tongues wagging after a viral video captured him embracing his mother-in-law during his colorful introduction ceremony in Masaka over the weekend.
In the footage, Mukisa is seen receiving a heartfelt hug from his wife’s mother after surprising her with a brand-new car. Overwhelmed with joy, the mother-in-law broke tradition to thank him for his generosity and hard work.
The gesture, however, has sparked heated debate across cultural circles. In Buganda, it is considered a serious taboo—over a thousand years old—for a son-in-law to physically interact with his mother-in-law, let alone embrace her. Traditionally, the two must maintain a respectful distance at all times, with even greetings done indirectly to preserve cultural boundaries.
Cultural enthusiasts argue that while Mukisa’s act reflected modern-day affection and gratitude, it also challenged long-held Buganda norms that continue to govern family relationships. Others see it as a symbol of changing times, where rigid cultural practices are slowly being bent by love, celebration, and social evolution.
Despite the storm, Mukisa’s generosity has earned him admiration online, with many praising him as a “responsible man” who honors and appreciates his in-laws.
Many netizens who seem to be young in age however seem to have found no problem with this and even questioned whether the two died. Many even argued that some cultural practices are outdated and need to be done away with.
It should be recalled that the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga recently rebuked city pastor, Joseph Sserwadda who advocated for marriage amongsy clan members. The pastor argued that such practices undermine Christianity.
