Police in Sheema have two women in cells for allegedly declining to participate in the ongoing census.

The two women have been identified by police as Beatrice Bashemereirwe, 56 years old, and Justin Bahumwire, 70, both residents of Nyakanshambya, Kyarukunda, Bugongi, Sheema District.

According to Laban Arinaitwe, the officer in charge of Census, Sheema district, an Enumerator went to the homes of Bashemereirwe and Bahumwire for the census, but they refused to be counted, claiming that their religion of “ENGIRI” doesn’t allow them to be counted.

“They were arrested, and a case file of sabotaging government programs was opened at CPS Sheema vide S.D. Ref 44/15/05/2024 and is being investigated on Sheema CRB 289/2024,” said Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson.

He added, “They are in police cells; however, one has agreed to be counted. We shall contact the enumerator to do it tomorrow.”

Ugandans who resist or sabotage the ongoing census, which started on May 10, 2024, will face 6 months imprisonment or pay a fine of 600,000 UGX.
