Government Facilitates Travel with E-Passport at Entebbe Airport

The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) has announced measures to streamline travel for Ugandan citizens arriving at Entebbe International Airport by introducing self-clearance gates.

Designed specifically for Ugandan citizens, the new e-gates aim to enhance efficiency and security at passport control. Passengers arriving from abroad can opt to use these gates to expedite the clearance process.

The e-gates utilize advanced technology, allowing travelers to scan their passports for authentication and undergo facial recognition for identity verification. Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi, highlighted the benefits of this technology, emphasizing its efficiency, time-saving capabilities, and error reduction.

Mundeyi expressed concerns regarding the underutilization of the gates, noting that while machines are available at multiple points, many Ugandans still prefer manual interaction with immigration officers.

Last year, the government upgraded from paper-based e-passports to polycarbonate e-passports with enhanced anti-fraud features. These new passports are compatible with the electronic gates for self-clearance and automated boarding pass issuance.

Despite significant investment in passport technology, passport applications have not met expectations. Mundeyi urged more Ugandans to apply for passports, noting the efficient processing times, with express applications being disposed of within two days.

The e-gate process involves scanning the passport, facial recognition, and issuance of a ticket for gate access. This streamlined process aims to enhance passenger experience and expedite immigration procedures at Entebbe Airport.
