Hoima city police arrested three demonstrators on Monday (November 20) for protesting against prolonged power outages in their area.
The protesters, led by a barber named John Mpuuga, marched from Kinubi town to UMEME offices, the local electricity provider, carrying placards that read, “We want electricity in Kinubi, enough is enough tukwenda masanyarazi” (We are tired of darkness).
The demonstrators expressed their frustration over the week-long blackout, which has disrupted their daily lives and businesses. Upon reaching UMEME offices, the protesters stormed the building, prompting police intervention.
The three protesters were arrested and taken to Hoima CPS but were later released on the orders of the District Police Commander.
Patrick Ssebulamu, the Hoima UMEME branch manager, acknowledged the power outages and apologized for the inconvenience caused to residents. He informed the public that a new transformer has been procured and will be installed on Wednesday to resolve the power issues in Kinubi.
