UPDF Hands Over Security of Vital Sites to Somali Forces

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers in Somalia have officially handed over the security responsibilities for key government installations to Somali forces. The ceremony, held at Villa Somalia on Sunday, December 17, saw the transfer of control for State House and Parliament security. Notable attendees included representatives from the United Nations, officials from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), and members of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Hussein Sheikh Ali Maalim, the National Security Advisor to the President, welcomed the dignitaries, emphasizing the significance of the handover. He stated that this event marks a crucial milestone for the federal government of Somalia, demonstrating its capability to ensure the security of its citizens. Maalim highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting its people, building confidence among the public in the ability of their own government to safeguard them.




Abdihakim Mohamed Yusuf, Chief of Staff office of the President, expressed gratitude to Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs), particularly the Ugandan forces, acknowledging their role in Somalia over the past 16 years. He emphasized the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab and conveyed appreciation for the sacrifices made by TCCs.




Mohamed Al-Amine Seouf, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Head of ATMIS, described the handover of State House and Parliament security as a crucial step in the ATMIS drawdown of phase two. He highlighted its importance in fulfilling the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2710 (2023) to reduce troop presence by December 2023, contributing to the Somalia Security transition plan.




Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omola, Sector One commander, expressed honor and privilege in handing over the vital installations protected by UPDF for the past 16 years. He detailed UPDF’s successful operations and the effective transition of security responsibilities to the Somalia Security Forces (SSF). Brig Gen Omola thanked the Somali community for their hospitality and cooperation throughout the years.

Dignitaries present at the handover included Catriona Laing (United Nations Special Representative), Lt Gen Sam Okiding (ATMIS Force Commander), Ms Qurat Sadozai (Officer in charge of UNSOS), and Col George Nkasah (Chief Plans Officer), among others.
