The family of the late Dr. Jino Abiriga, the acting Masindi District Health Officer, is calling on the government to expedite investigations into his untimely death. Dr. Abiriga’s lifeless body was discovered near his residence in Kijura Cell on a Sunday morning, prompting a special sitting of the Masindi District Council to pay their respects to the deceased.
During the meeting, Mr. Patrick Anima, a cousin of Dr. Abiriga, expressed the family’s urgent desire for a swift resolution to the case. “The family wants a quick solving of the case so that all the people behind the killing of our brother can be brought to book,” he stated. Emphasizing the need for justice, Anima highlighted that resolving the case would not only honor the deceased but also provide answers to the grieving family and the community at large.
This appeal comes on the heels of the police revealing that Dr. Abiriga’s wife, Betty Cherotich, has been taken into custody in connection to his death. The Masindi Chief Administrative Officer, Ms. Sanyu Phiona, provided additional insight into Dr. Abiriga’s exemplary career. Commencing as a medical officer in 1999, he was later promoted to principal medical officer in 2002 due to his outstanding contributions to the field.
Dr. John Turyagaruka, the former Masindi District Health Officer, remembered Dr. Abiriga as a staunch advocate for improved healthcare in the Bunyoro Sub-region. He emphasized the late health officer’s passion for addressing challenges arising from the high doctor-patient ratio.
In the midst of their grief, Mr. Tom Butela, Dr. Abiriga’s brother, urged the community to support the family, particularly in providing education for the deceased’s children.
