Fishing activities at Lake Edward, particularly in Lake Katwe Sub-County of Kasese district, are facing a serious threat from water hyacinth. These invasive plants have spread over the waters due to heavy rains and strong winds.
The water hyacinth is causing problems for fishermen, especially when they need to cross the waters near Katunguru Bridge. The plants make it difficult for boats to move effectively.
While water hyacinth can provide breeding grounds for aquatic species, some fishermen at the Katunguru fishing landing site are facing challenges. They report that since the start of the March-May rainy season, they have been struggling with the issue.
Fishermen like Mr. Isa Twikirize and Weere Bakya have experienced losses of fishing equipment such as nets and hooks. They explain that the hyacinth carries their gear away, causing them to lose it in the water.
According to Mr. Wilson Asiimwe, the Chairperson of Lake Katwe sub-county, human activities in the surrounding hills might be contributing to the problem. Debris from running waters, including waste from activities like tree cutting and plastic disposal, flows into the lake, worsening the situation.
Mr. Ojede Kadiri, Chairperson of the Katunguru Community Development Association, is concerned that the blocked pathways caused by the water hyacinth are enabling illegal fishing activities. He notes that marine officials are struggling to reach all parts of the lakeside due to these obstacles.
