Ahead of the upcoming Martyrs Day celebrations in Namugongo, the Uganda Police has announced a detailed traffic management plan to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles and pedestrians during the event. The plan includes various measures and guidelines aimed at minimizing congestion and facilitating safe movement for participants and visitors.
According to the plan, the Jinja-Kampala highway will maintain normal traffic flow, except for specific areas where temporary diversions will be implemented. One such diversion will be on the Kireka to Kyaliwajjala road, which will be designated as a one-way route for vehicles heading to the venue.
Similarly, the Kyaliwajjala to Naalya interchange will also operate as a one-way route towards Naalya interchange, allowing people to exit from Namugongo with ease. To accommodate pedestrian traffic, the stretch from Kyaliwajjala Trading Center to the Basilica/Catholic Church will be reserved exclusively for pedestrians, with designated lanes for VVIPs and emergency vehicles.
To ensure compliance with the traffic management plan, vehicles must display appropriate stickers on their windshields to avoid unnecessary delays. VIPs with vehicles bearing the required stickers will be granted access to designated parking spaces at the Basilica/Catholic Church and Protestant Church.
Specific routes and parking arrangements have been outlined for different groups, including foreign pilgrims, medical service vehicles, and service providers. Foreign pilgrims to the Basilica/Catholic Church, for instance, will be dropped off at Kyaliwajjala Trading Center, while medical service vehicles will be identified by green stickers for easy recognition.
Furthermore, the plan addresses parking arrangements for pilgrims arriving from various routes, ensuring efficient use of available spaces and minimizing congestion. Motorists are advised to adhere to the guidelines provided by traffic police and cooperate to avoid delays and inconveniences.
In addition to regulating traffic flow, the plan also prohibits parking for the general public at both the Basilica/Catholic Church and Protestant/Anglican Church. Taxi stages at designated areas will be closed during the event, and any vehicles found in prohibited areas will be impounded at the owner’s expense.
As the Martyrs Day celebrations draw near, the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety extends its best wishes to all Christians participating in the activities. The implementation of the traffic management plan aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the commemorations in Namugongo.
