Entebbe International Airport, Uganda’s primary aviation hub, recently recorded its second-highest monthly passenger traffic in January 2024. According to Mr. Vianney Luggya, the spokesperson for the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), a total of 196,211 international passengers were documented during this period, comprising 99,216 arrivals and 96,995 departures.
This figure marks the second-highest passenger traffic ever recorded in a single month in the history of Entebbe International Airport. Mr. Luggya highlighted that the average daily passenger count for January 2024 stood at 6,329, closely trailing behind the record set in December 2023, which saw an average of 6,418 passengers per day.
The notable increase in passenger traffic for January can be attributed, in part, to Uganda’s hosting of significant international summits, including the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), IGAD, and G77+ China gatherings held from January 15 to 23, 2024. These events drew a substantial number of delegates, including Presidents, Heads of State, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers, contributing to the overall surge in passenger numbers.
In addition to passenger movements, Entebbe International Airport also witnessed significant activity in cargo operations during January 2024. A total of 1,579 metric tonnes of imports and 3,604 metric tonnes of exports were processed, resulting in a combined cargo volume of 5,183 metric tonnes for the month.
