Rukungiri, Uganda – Residents of Katerampungu Parish in Bugangari Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have raised alarm over the deteriorating state of roads in their area.
They are calling on the government and local leaders to urgently intervene and improve the region’s crumbling infrastructure.
The concerns were voiced during a campaign rally held by aspiring Woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri District, Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye, at Nyangajara Primary School playground in Nyangajara B Cell.
Residents specifically singled out the Omukarere–Rugarama trading center road as among the worst affected, describing it as nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season.
“The road becomes a nightmare when it rains. Vehicles get stuck, and movement is almost impossible,” said Jon Ahimbisibwe, one of the concerned residents.
Other residents, including Allan Gumisiriza and Doreen Owembabazi, echoed similar frustrations, noting that poor road conditions are limiting development and restricting access to essential services such as healthcare and education.
Josephate Tumwebaze, the LC1 Chairperson of Nyangajara Cell, confirmed that no government funding has ever been allocated for road maintenance in the area. He added that while residents had previously relied on communal labor to repair the roads, that approach is no longer sustainable.
“We have been patching these roads ourselves for years, but it’s too much now. We need lasting solutions,” Tumwebaze said, urging both current and aspiring leaders to take immediate action.
In her address, Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye acknowledged the concerns and pledged to champion the people’s issues in Parliament if elected in 2026.
“Our people continue to suffer because their challenges are not well represented in Parliament,” she said. “If elected, I will advocate for equitable service delivery and ensure that critical infrastructure like roads, electricity, and clean water are prioritized.”
She called on residents to vote for leaders who are people-centered and development-focused, promising inclusive leadership that uplifts underserved communities.
The rally highlighted growing public frustration with poor infrastructure in rural Rukungiri as the country edges closer to the 2026 general elections.
