Kabale Police Constables Demand Full Election Pay as they Stage Peaceful Protest

KABALE, Uganda –– Around 730 police constables in Kabale District took to the streets on Tuesday to demand payment of their outstanding allowances from the 2026 General Elections.

The officers, who were employed on three-month contracts, say they have only received one month’s salary. They marched to the offices of the Resident District Commissioner, the Electoral Commission, and Kabale Central Police Station, pressing authorities to address their grievances as a crisis meeting was underway.

One of the constables said, “We served during the elections as agreed, yet most of us are still unpaid. We are asking for what is rightfully ours.”

The protest reflects a wider issue affecting election workers. Many polling officials and other temporary agents have also publicly complained about delayed payments from the EC, with some calling on the commission to settle arrears immediately.

District officials confirmed they were aware of the protest and that talks were ongoing with the EC to resolve the matter. An official involved in the discussions said, “The authorities are reviewing the pending payments. We hope to have a solution soon.”

Observers note that delays in paying election staff can affect morale and trust in the electoral process, especially among those who work on short-term contracts.

The demonstration ended peacefully, and the officers returned to their posts, awaiting confirmation from authorities that their outstanding allowances will be cleared without further delays.
