Kampala, Uganda – Concerns over alleged mismanagement at Old Kampala Secondary School (SSS) have been formally raised by the school’s old students, who accuse the Head Teacher of incompetence and actions that contravene government regulations.
In a letter addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Sports, old students, led by Board Representative Waggala Isaac, claim the Head Teacher engaged in several unauthorized activities that threaten the school’s governance and heritage.
Among the allegations, the Head Teacher is accused of:
Cutting down historical trees planted by alumni, allegedly under influence from foundation board members Don Muganzi Kitabire and Tom Balojja, without approval from the school board or permits from KCCA and NEMA.
Selling the school bus, donated by former old student Rwandan President Paul Kagame, at a price considered far below its market value (UGX 60 million), without following government procedures.
Selling school vans and furniture without board approval.
Employing staff without proper authorization, repeating mistakes highlighted in previous Auditor General and Inspector General of Government (IGG) reports.
The letter also alleges that the Head Teacher has refused to comply with board decisions aimed at halting unauthorized staff appointments, raising concerns over governance and accountability.
The old students have reiterated their earlier warnings to the Ministry about posting an inexperienced administrator at the school and have requested the immediate transfer of the Head Teacher and appointment of a qualified administrator who adheres to government procedures.
Copies of the complaint have also been sent to the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Minister for Higher Education, KCCA and NEMA executives, and all members of the Old Kampala SSS Board.
The school has yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
