26-Year-Old Suspect Dies in Police Custody in Rubanda

Rubanda District is mourning the death of a 26-year-old man who reportedly became unconscious while in police custody. The deceased, identified as Gilbert Ayebare, was a resident of Habuhinga Village in Ikamiro Parish, Muko Sub-county.

Ayebare had been arrested by police at Rubanda Central Police Station over allegations of stealing a mobile phone. According to reports, he became unresponsive while in custody and was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival on Sunday at around 1:00 p.m.

Local authorities confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Ayebare’s death. Police spokespersons have urged the public to remain calm as the inquiry is ongoing.

Community members expressed shock over the sudden death, highlighting concerns about the handling of suspects in custody. “It is very sad to lose someone this way,” said one local resident. “We hope the authorities investigate thoroughly so that justice is served.”

The Uganda Police Force has a duty to ensure the safety of all individuals in custody, and incidents like these often draw attention to the need for stricter oversight and transparency in detention facilities. Families of detainees and human rights organizations have called for accountability in cases where suspects die while in police custody.

Ayebare’s family is yet to release an official statement, but relatives were seen at the hospital mourning the loss of their loved one. Police officials said that more details will be made available as the investigation progresses.

This incident adds to ongoing national conversations about the treatment of suspects in custody and the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies to protect the rights and well-being of individuals under their care.
