Ugandan Woman Arrested in Cocaine Smuggling Bust at Sri Lanka Airport

A 47-year-old Ugandan woman has been arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport after Sri Lanka Customs foiled a major cocaine smuggling attempt.

According to officials, the suspect was intercepted on arrival aboard Qatar Airways flight QR664, which had traveled from Uganda via Doha. She was singled out for inspection based on intelligence information and risk profiling.

During the search, customs officers discovered 21 cocaine capsules concealed in her clothing, weighing a total of 274 grams. The drugs are estimated to have a street value of approximately Rs. 12.33 million.

Authorities suspect the woman may have ingested additional cocaine pellets. Medical examinations and legal procedures are currently underway to confirm this.

The suspect, along with the seized narcotics, has been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations and possible prosecution.

Sri Lanka Customs said the interception highlights the effectiveness of its intelligence-led operations and tight surveillance at international entry points. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to combating global drug trafficking and preventing the country from being used as a transit hub or destination for illicit substances.
