AMOLATAR, Uganda – A high-stakes council meeting meant to approve Amolatar District’s budget collapsed on Friday 8th may ,2026 after councillors staged a dramatic boycott over months of unpaid allowances and allegations of financial mismanagement, plunging the local government into a fresh crisis.
The session, which started at 11:30 a.m., lasted barely ten minutes before disgruntled councillors walked out, bringing official business to a halt. Attempts to resume the meeting after a three-hour standoff failed, with angry exchanges between council members and top district officials, including newly posted Chief Administrative Officer Rhoda Oroma and District Chairperson Geoffrey Ocen Kiring.
The councillors vowed not to deliberate on any district business – including the crucial budget – until every cent of their outstanding arrears is cleared. Their frustrations, they said, stem from months of non-payment amid allegations that district funds have been mismanaged.
“We cannot discuss budgets or development plans when those expected to implement them have not been paid,” one councillor said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation.
With no end to the standoff in sight, District Speaker Martin Ayonge officially adjourned the house indefinitely. He insisted that no further sittings would occur until the members’ financial claims are settled.
The collapse of the meeting leaves the district’s financial plans in limbo, potentially stalling key services and development projects that depend on the pending budget approval.
Efforts to reach the Chief Administrative Officer and the District Chairperson for comment were unsuccessful by press time. However, sources close to the district leadership indicated that efforts are underway to verify the arrears and explore possible solutions.
Political analysts warn that the impasse could disrupt service delivery in Amolatar unless resolved quickly. The district now faces a race against time to reconcile the grievances before the next statutory sitting deadlines lapse.
