President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Justice Moses Kaziibwe Kawumi as the new Deputy Chief Justice of Uganda, according to a press release issued by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) on Thursday, 14th May 2026.
The announcement marks a significant development within Uganda’s judiciary, as Justice Kawumi is expected to take up one of the highest judicial offices in the country once Parliament approves the appointment.
In the same communication, President Museveni also appointed Her Worship Agnes Alum as the new Chief Registrar, a key administrative position in the judiciary responsible for overseeing court operations and case management across the country.
The PPU noted that the name of the newly appointed Deputy Chief Justice has already been forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval in line with constitutional requirements.
The appointments come at a time when the judiciary continues to play a critical role in strengthening the administration of justice, improving efficiency in courts, and handling an increasing number of cases nationwide.
Legal observers say the appointments could further shape judicial reforms and enhance service delivery within Uganda’s justice system.
The Deputy Chief Justice is one of the most senior judicial officers in the country and is responsible for deputizing the Chief Justice as well as supervising the Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court.
