In a tragic incident that has shaken the Rubanda community, a hit-and-run accident claimed the life of Tumukunde Zefurino, a 35 year old teacher at Nyabikoni Secondary School in Kabale Municipality. Zefurino, a resident of Mukasa village in Nyarurambi Parish, Muko Sub County, was the victim of this unfortunate incident.

The accident occurred on the evening of the incident, at approximately 19:30 PM. Along the Kabale-Kisoro road in Harutenga, Rubanda District, Zefurino was struck by a white Toyota Premio with registration number UAX 473M. The vehicle was being driven by 71-year-old Fred Rwigyema, a businessman hailing from Murore A in Nyakabungo Ward, Rubanda Town Council. At the time of writing, Rwigyema remains evading authorities.

This tragic collision unfolded when Fred Rwigyema, traveling from Kabale to Rubanda, reportedly engaged in reckless driving behavior. He veered into the opposite lane, leading to a head-on collision with Zefurino’s motorcycle.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, has attributed this accident to the irresponsible actions of Rwigyema while operating the vehicle.

The impact of the collision left Zefurino with severe head injuries. Promptly, a Good Samaritan transported him to Hamurwa Health Center IV. Later, due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to Rugarama Hospital in Kabale District. Tragically, Zefurino succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead around 11:00 PM.

As part of the investigative process, Asp Wakatuma and the team from the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety (DTO) in Rubanda visited the accident scene. Both vehicles involved were towed to Rubanda Police for Inspection of Vehicles (IOV) examination.

In the wake of this unfortunate incident, the police are actively pursuing the driver, Fred Rwigyema, who fled the scene after the accident. Community members and law enforcement agencies are determined to bring justice to the grieving family and the memory of Tumukunde Zefurino.
