MBARARA, UGANDA — Mbarara District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), David Muhwezi, has been arrested over allegations related to the allocation and management of district land.
Muhwezi’s arrest follows recommendations by the District Public Accounts Committee, which has been investigating the allocation of several parcels of land belonging to Mbarara District Local Government.
According to reports, the committee raised concerns regarding the allocation of district land to various institutions and entities. The land in question includes approximately 0.427 hectares allocated to Uganda Management Institute (UMI), 0.626 hectares allocated to Makerere University Business School (MUBS), 1.4221 hectares allocated to Megger Technical Services, and 0.524 hectares allocated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, among other allocations.
The District Public Accounts Committee reportedly resolved that further investigations be conducted into the circumstances under which the land was allocated, citing concerns about compliance with established procedures and the protection of public assets.
Sources indicate that law enforcement agencies moved in to arrest the CAO as investigations into the matter intensified. Authorities have yet to release detailed information regarding the specific charges that may be preferred against the district official.
The arrest has generated significant interest among residents and local leaders, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the management of public land.
District land is considered a valuable public resource intended to support service delivery and development projects. Any irregularities in its allocation could have far-reaching implications for the district and its residents.
Officials from the relevant investigative agencies have not yet issued a comprehensive statement on the matter, but sources suggest that inquiries are ongoing and could involve additional district officials and stakeholders connected to the disputed land transactions.
As investigations continue, residents and leaders alike are awaiting further details on the allegations and the legal process that will follow.
