RIPA, UIC Seal Deal to Insure Farmers’ Livestock in Landmark Partnership

Kampala, Uganda — The Rural Initiative for Poverty Alleviation (RIPA) has today entered into a strategic partnership with the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Consortium (UIC) aimed at safeguarding livestock farmers against unexpected losses.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the UIC headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, marking a major step forward in strengthening agricultural resilience among smallholder farmers benefiting from RIPA programs.

Under the agreement, beneficiaries receiving cows and goats through RIPA will now be enrolled in a subsidized insurance scheme where the Government of Uganda will cover 50% of the insurance premium.

Farmers will contribute the remaining 50%. In the event of livestock loss due to disease, accidents, or other covered risks, farmers will be compensated up to 80% of the animal’s assessed value at the time of insurance.

Initially, the scheme will focus on RIPA cattle and goats, with plans to expand coverage in the future to include other agricultural enterprises such as poultry, fish farming, and crop production.

Speaking at the signing, RIPA was represented by Executive Vice Chairman Vincent Tumusiime Bamugaya alongside Program Director Mrs. Rosebell Akiiki Tumusiime. The Uganda Agriculture Insurance Consortium was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Munya, the Company Secretary, and other senior officials.

Stakeholders described the partnership as a significant milestone in promoting sustainable livelihoods and reducing vulnerability among rural farming communities that rely on livestock as a key source of income and food security.
