The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has inaugurated an electric motorbike charging station at its Rubaga division office, marking a significant step towards advancing the Smart City Agenda and promoting green transportation solutions in Kampala.

In collaboration with the European Union (EU) through the Partnership for Inclusive Urban Development (PIFUD) programme, KCCA aims to mitigate fossil fuel consumption and environmental pollution in the city with this initiative.

The electric motorbike charging station, a key investment in low-carbon energy systems delivery, reflects KCCA’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable urban mobility.

Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago commended the joint efforts of KCCA, EU, and other stakeholders in facilitating the transition to a green economy, emphasizing the importance of initiatives like the electric motorbike charging station in curbing environmental pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Partnering with Zembo, an e-mobility company, has been crucial in providing affordable electric motorcycles, locally assembled in Uganda. With over 20 charging points established across the city and more than 300 electric motorcycles already in operation, the project signifies a significant step forward in promoting sustainable urban mobility.

EU Head of Inclusive Green Economy, Lennart Derrider, highlighted the collective commitment to fostering green mobility solutions, underscoring the importance of initiatives like the electric motorbike charging station in promoting environmental sustainability.

Edson Masereka, the PIFUD project coordinator, emphasized the project’s aim to transition motorcycles from fossil fuel dependency to green energy alternatives, contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment.

Despite the limited number of electric motorcycles currently in Kampala, stakeholders are optimistic about the transformative impact of sustainable transportation solutions on the city’s urban landscape.
