More drama as Guinea demands the 1976 AFCON trophy from CAF after Morocco walked off the pitch for nearly an hour

A fresh controversy has emerged in African football, as Guinea calls on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to revisit the outcome of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations.

The demand follows recent developments in CAF decisions, which have reignited debate over historical fairness in African competitions. The Guinea Football Federation is now pushing for a reassessment of the 1976 title, arguing that past incidents should be judged using consistent disciplinary standards.

The 1976 tournament, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, used a final group-stage format instead of a traditional knockout final. The decisive match was between Guinea and Morocco. Guinea needed a victory to win the title, while Morocco only required a draw.

After Guinea took the lead, Morocco protested a refereeing decision and walked off the pitch. The team later returned after a delay of more than ten minutes. The match eventually ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that handed Morocco the championship.

Citing recent precedents, Guinea now argues that Morocco’s temporary walkout should have led to disciplinary action. Under modern football regulations, such an incident would likely result in a 3-0 forfeiture. “Give us back the 1976 trophy,” the appeal states, emphasizing the need for uniform application of rules.

However, CAF faces a complex situation. The regulations that currently punish walkouts with automatic forfeits were not in place in 1976, raising questions about whether modern rules can be applied retroactively.

CAF has yet to make a definitive ruling and is reportedly taking time to assess the matter. There is growing speculation that the dispute could escalate to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Nearly 50 years later, the events of that decisive match continue to spark debate, showing that in football, some results are never truly settled.

The call comes after CAF stripped Senegal of its 2025 AFCON title following a walk-off protest in the final against host Morocco, awarding Morocco a 3-0 forfeit win.

Senegal has indicated plans to appeal the 2025 decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, while Guinea has publicly urged CAF to “give us back our 1976 AFCON trophy,” highlighting lingering frustrations over past controversies.
