MP and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Mathias Mpuuga, addressed the controversy surrounding his receipt of a Shs500 million service award in a recent interview with Monitor’s Elizabeth Kamurungi, Nyendo-Mukungwe. With his characteristic candor, Mpuuga delved into various aspects of his tenure, the challenges facing the Opposition, and his views on President Museveni’s leadership. Here are some edited excerpts from the interview:

Reflecting on His Tenure as LoP

“It was action-packed,” Mpuuga began, reflecting on his time as LoP. “We worked tirelessly, and I haven’t stopped since. It was a period of intense activity amidst a changing political landscape with new players emerging.”

While acknowledging that he didn’t achieve all his goals, Mpuuga expressed pride in the impact he made. “I believe I changed the perspectives of the members I led on politics, Parliament, and government oversight,” he said. “I also raised crucial questions that remain unanswered by the regime.”

Addressing Allegations of Selling Out

Responding to allegations of “selling out” to the regime, Mpuuga dismissed them as baseless rumors. “Can anyone provide evidence?” he quipped. “These are just unfortunate rumors from those who fail to grasp the complexities of parliamentary dynamics.”

Mpuuga emphasized the nuanced nature of Opposition politics, both inside and outside Parliament. “The Opposition operates differently in different spaces,” he explained. “As a leader, you must navigate various interests and ensure your voice is heard.”

Assessing the Current State of the Opposition

“The Opposition is growing, fueled by public disenchantment,” Mpuuga observed. “However, internal divisions pose challenges. Some advocate for immediate electoral participation, while others prioritize reforms.”

He lamented the lack of unity within the Opposition, noting, “We need to speak with one voice to effectively challenge the status quo. The current disarray only confuses the masses.”

Views on President Museveni and Succession

When asked about President Museveni’s role as a roadblock to democracy, Mpuuga minced no words. “Museveni has thwarted democratic processes,” he asserted. “His manipulation of term limits and age limits stifles change.”

Regarding the elevation of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son, to Chief of Defence Forces, Mpuuga expressed concerns about dynastic tendencies. “This sets a dangerous precedent,” he warned. “Leadership should be based on merit, not lineage.”

On the Controversial Service Award

In response to questions about the Shs500 million service award, Mpuuga defended the decision, citing parliamentary protocols. “The Commission has the authority to address MPs’ welfare,” he explained. “This was a lawful acknowledgment of my service.”

Regarding accusations of conflict of interest, Mpuuga reiterated his adherence to legal procedures. “The Commission operates within legal frameworks,” he stated. “Declarations are made when conflicts arise, ensuring transparency.”

Facing Criticism and Maintaining Integrity

When pressed on the public backlash, Mpuuga remained steadfast. “Criticism comes with the territory,” he shrugged. “But I stand by my actions. Integrity is non-negotiable.”

He urged for constructive debate, saying, “Let’s discuss issues with understanding, not slander. Sentiments without reason are futile.”

Looking Ahead

In closing, Mpuuga emphasized the need for unity and maturity within the party and the country. “We must listen, support, and stop undermining each other,” he urged. “Only then can we offer hope for a better future.”

As the interview concluded, Mpuuga reassured his constituents, saying, “I remain committed to serving Nyendo-Mukungwe. Trust that I will continue to fight for what’s right, with even greater determination.”
