Makerere University Guild President, Churchill Sentamu, who is also the nephew of opposition leader Bobi Wine, has continued to make headlines for charting his own path in Ugandan politics. Recently nominated to contest for Youth MP – Central Region, Sentamu has emphasized that he is not affiliated with any political party and will run as an independent candidate.
“I am not aligned to any political party. I’m running independently and my goal is to deliver leadership that unites young people and addresses their challenges. I want to work with everyone for the development of the youth, not just one camp,” Sentamu told a local TV station.
Sentamu’s independent stance is not entirely new. Earlier this year, he was expelled from the National Unity Platform (NUP) after losing the party flag for the Makerere Guild elections and choosing to contest independently. Despite criticism from his family—including his father, Fred Nyanzi, and uncle Bobi Wine—he has continued to assert his independence.
The young leader sparked controversy after he posed for a photo and shook hands with President Yoweri Museveni during a university visit, a move that drew criticism from NUP supporters and some party foot soldiers. Sentamu defended his actions, saying he was simply fulfilling his duties as Guild President and was proud to welcome the President to Makerere University.
Even with the backlash, Sentamu has continued to receive recognition for his principled approach and willingness to work across political divides. His journey highlights the challenges and rewards of standing firm on personal convictions, even when they conflict with family loyalties.
