Ghana Announces Visa-Free Entry for All Africans Countries Effective May 2026

Ghana has announced that it will grant visa-free entry to all African passport holders beginning May 25, 2026, in a significant policy shift aimed at promoting regional integration and mobility across the continent.

The decision was confirmed by President John Mahama during an official state visit by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The implementation date coincides with Africa Day, highlighting the broader symbolic importance of the initiative.

The policy removes the requirement for pre-arrival visas for African travelers, marking a major change in Ghana’s immigration framework. Officials say the move is intended to facilitate easier movement across borders, while strengthening economic and cultural ties within Africa.

The initiative builds on a previous proposal by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who announced plans for visa-free travel for African nationals in early 2025. However, the measure was not implemented before the end of his administration.

With this development, Ghana joins a limited number of African countries—including Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles—that offer visa-free access to all African passport holders.

According to Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, the policy forms part of a broader reform of Ghana’s immigration system. This includes the rollout of a new e-visa platform expected to launch in the coming weeks, designed to streamline entry procedures while maintaining border security.

Authorities anticipate that the visa-free regime will boost tourism, encourage business travel, and enhance intra-African trade. The policy also aligns with wider continental efforts to ease movement and economic cooperation under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area.

In parallel, Ghana has expanded travel access for its own citizens, with the government securing 23 visa waiver agreements over the past year.

The introduction of visa-free entry for African nationals is expected to significantly improve mobility across the continent and further position Ghana as a key advocate for Pan-African cooperation and integration.
